Course Description
Do you like to think critically about representations of queerness? Are you interested in television history, character analysis, and the impact of pop culture on society? Then this course is for you.
Join writer Hope Rehak for a four-week class over Zoom about representations of LGBTQIA+ characters from the 1960s to today. Each week, participants will watch TV clips and discuss specific shows, episodes, and performances that touch on LGBTQIA+ characters and storylines.
From Uncle Arthur on "Bewitched," to "Queer As Folk" at the turn of the last century, and on through today's portrayals of queerness in shows like "Our Flag Means Death," "The Magicians," and "Heartstopper," participants will discuss how LGBTQIA+ characters have been represented and misrepresented on American television for decades.

This seminar will offer space for fannish types to engage critically with beloved, messy, outdated, and radical TV from the last 60+ years.
Through discussion and personal reflection, participants will be invited to consider the limitations and radical interventions of previous generations. Together, they’ll consider how creators of the past were able to sneak certain politics into the mainstream and how some TV shows worked to broaden Americans' understanding of lifestyles they wouldn't necessarily have observed in their own daily lives.
Students will walk away from this class with a better understanding of television history and a toolkit for analyzing, critiquing and enjoying television shows from the last six decades.

Hope Rehak
Instructor (she/her)
Hope Rehak writes for and about film, theater, and television. She earned her MFA in Writing for the Screen & Stage from Northwestern University, and previously graduated from Chicago Public Schools and Oberlin College with a BA in Creative Writing. She has taught at Northwestern, The Spring School, and Green Shirt Studio, among others. Her writing has appeared in Bright Wall/Dark Room, Catapult, and Reductress.
